Amy, you say "scenario", while I say "anecdote". hehe Smile

This is for anyone who cares to know:

I can tell = I am certain = I know

... but used in perhaps a more sneaky/sinister fashion:

I can tell that you just raided the cookie jar -- you've got chocolate all over your mouth.

There's dirt all over you -- what were you doing? I can tell you've been up to no good.

The way you smile at her, I can tell it's a crush.

It's as if we use "I can tell" when we have sniffed out an attempted lie/secret/pretense of someone who's trying to get away with it... and we want that person to know that we're not fooled.

At least that's one main instance in which "I can tell" is used.

But on its face... really on its face, per se (hehe)... I can tell = I know.

Molly, mostly.

Clearly an indication on why one shouldn't bother hitting on Teflese speakers. They're a dry well from which to fill one's cup with satiation.

Hi Skrej,

I don't agree with you at all. Urd has always been the one trying to harmonize the entire Norn family so I think Urd should be supported by us. The true villain here is Rint!

No way. Any old crone wielding scissors is to be feared. Experience has taught me thus.

Hi Skrej,

It might be true that Urd has a tendency to be a bit grumpy at times but I certainly wouldn't call her an old scissor wielding crone. You just don't know what a sweetheart she can be...

And it seems you'd teach existential "there" before "the imperative". Am I right?

I'm happy to accept advice on this one, old chap.

Which way round do you teach them?

First, why did/would you decide to teach existential "there" before "the imperative"?

The way round each adult student needed them.

2. The way round each adult student needed them.

1. That was your assumption, not MrP's

2. Interesting. So what would that be then?

You want me to decide exactly when the many students will each feel they have a need for each form?

Do you teach ESL or EFL, Ralf? If an elementary level student showed that he needed to make qualified statements, would you teach him conditional forms?

OK, you have no answer. Just questions. Get back to me once you've taught your first lesson.

Ralf, the answer is here:

Just add a "felt he/she" between "student" and "needed". I thought it was implied, but...
