There will certainly be occasions when two woulds can happily cohabit in a sentence.
Best wishes,

Hi everybody, I just have 2 questions about this:
I would hope he would be OK with my decision.
1/ Does it mean: I used to hope he would be OK with my decision 2/ And can it mean: I will hope he will be OK with my decision? (if yes, what's the difference between the two versions?)
Many thanks, Nessie. _________________ :(... something we never have again, I know... I guess I really really know.. :(

Hello Nessie,
1. I used to hope he would be OK with my decision.
It could mean that, yes, as in:
1a. Every time Theo was away from the office, and I had to order the laptops myself, I would hope he would be ok with my decision when he returned.
But it would be much more likely to be a "distanced" version of:
2. I hope he will be OK with my decision.
in a context such as:
2a. "What do you think Theo would say, if he knew you'd bought Toshibas instead of the usual Acers?" "I would hope he would be ok with my decision."
Best wishes,
MrP |

Is "I will hope he will be OK with my decision." OK? |

As a native speaker, M., you're perfectly able to answer that yourself.

MrP, this stupid game of yours prevents me getting the responses I need. I've asked you time and time again why you keep calling me a native speaker when I am not. Why do you do that? |

1. Because, in common with other people here, I know you from other forums, where you post as a native-speaker and ESL teacher-trainer.
2. Because of the style and content of your posts.
3. Because other posters might otherwise waste their time in answering your questions, while genuine ESL requests go unanswered.
Best wishes,

Mr P, you don't know me at all.
I'll ask others my question, if you will allow:

So, we have a situation of millions of people wanting or having to learn English but no where near enough native-speaking teachers to do the job. What do we do about that? Do we allow nonantives to teach only up to the upper-intermediate level and then hope the millions of students, who may wish to go on to Jamie's "very advanced" level, will be economically stable, or lucky, enough to employ a native-speaking teacher to take them the "rest of the way"? Or do we hope that such students will then become autodidactic and steer their own path to greater glory in English usage?
What do we do about the world wide lack of qualified native teachers? How can supply meet demand? |

You should read what Molly has written about her own level of competence in English. It's here somewhere, I'm sure you would find it if it didn't threaten destroy your silly argument.
And let's not talk about your ability to fake expertise, MrP. Confronted by "sticky" questions, you disappear for a while and then come back with well-Googled, well-prepared answers. Next to you, MrP, I'm an amateur, right? |

Hi MrP, In this second case, I wonder the possibility as well as the difference among these responses: 1/ 'I would hope he would be ok with my decision' 2/ 'I hope he would be ok with my decision' 3/ 'I will hope he will be ok with my decision'
Many thanks, Nessie. _________________ :(... something we never have again, I know... I guess I really really know.. :(

Hello Nessie,
#1 distances (from the speaker) both the "hoping" and the speculation as to "what Theo would say". This accords with the "distance" of the first speaker's question.
#2 distances only the speculation: the "hope" is presented as immediate.
(I should add that "distance" relates to how speakers want to present a subject, and not necessarily to how they privately regard it. So here, we have no way of knowing whether the speakers are desperately worried or entirely relaxed about T's likely response.)
The #3 structure doesn't quite fit here; it might possibly serve in e.g. this kind of context:
4. "What will you do when Theo finds out?" "I shall look very innocent and hope that he won't be too angry to give me a lift home."
("and hope" here = "and [I shall] hope".)
But predicting "hope" on one's own part is a fairly rare occurrence; more probable would be this kind of structure and context:
5. "What do you think Theo will say when he finds out?" "I hope he'll be reasonable about it. They may be more expensive, but they're better laptops."
Best wishes,
MrP |
