Hi,

The word 'just' suggests 'only with difficulty' here because the window is very small.

Teacher Alan, good evening.
The use of "only just" is unclear for me, would you please be as kind to explain further?

To me it looks like an "overlapping idea".
I think of these two word as synonyms, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks a lot and good night.
God bless.
Cisco.

Hi,

In the sentence:

Quote:
It's only a small window really and we can only just see the sea

the meaning is that through the small window you get a view of the sea but it is very difficult to see much and you can hardly see the sea although it is just visible.

Let me give you another example. If you take an examination and you need 40 points to pass, someone who gets 41 points only just passes and someone who gets 39 points only just fails. Again if it was your 18th birthday two days ago, you would say: I am only just 18.

I hope that helps.

Alan
