Maybe to add to the others
Playing football. Am going for a game of soccer. I am playing a pick up/ knock about game. (depends if the phrase has been retained by the learner). I play football in the afternoon.
Why is frequency of usage important to you? _________________ Please meet Stewart Tunncilff |

Hi Molly
Regional or even versions may occur spontaneously in a classroom situation, do you not agree.
How can we control the variations that students come up with? _________________ Please meet Stewart Tunncilff |

They may indeed.

To which extent would you like to control them? |

Hi Molly
I am not sure I would like to control them beyond useful and appropriate communication, how about you? _________________ Please meet Stewart Tunncilff |

Nope, that seems a good limit, but who decides what is "useful and appropriate communication"? |

hi
Useful and appropriate communication depends on context, and intention.
You wouldn´t swear at a strict boss, and you surely wouldn´t be all posh on a construction site now would you? _________________ Please meet Stewart Tunncilff |

Indeed not, but most language teaching seems to focus on speaking with the boss and not with the lads on a construction site, which is an unfortunate state of affairs.
As an example, would you advise using "whom" on a construction site?
How difficult is it to decide on which language items should go into each syllabus? Do you believe that a syllabus should include only maximally useful items? |

| Which definition of "grammar"? | Can one tell just by looking at a verb if it is finite or non-finite? |
