'enough is enough' and 'period!' #1 (permalink) Tue Sep 16, 2008 4:34 am   'enough is enough' and 'period!'

Hi,
Please have a look at this:

Enough's enough. I don't wanna hear anything more about that. Period!
=> I wonder if this context is all right, or must I omit either 'enough is enough' or 'period!'. Do they mean (and can be used) exactly the same?
By the way, which is used frequently: "enough's enough", or "enough is enough"?

Many thanks,
Nessie.

Hi nessie,

It's fine the way you have it. If you want a little extra emphasis, keep the 'Period!'. Otherwise, you could leave it off. It's not wrong, it just gives the statement an even stronger feeling.

Kind of like my mother adding extra words to her proclamations every time it looked like I was about to say another word.

Mom: "blah blah blah an that's it."
me: "but"
Mom: "Period."
me: "bu..."
Mom: "The end."
me: "b..."
Mom: "No more."
me: *silent glare
Mom: "Finally."

She could keep stringing on stuff for extra emphasis until I gave up.

As for 'enough's enough' or 'enough is enough', again, either will work, and both are frequently used. Saying the full 'enough is enough' sounds a little bit more forceful, maybe, at least to me.
