That's the first thing I saw as well - "outside of" seems odd to me.
Is it wrong? I'm not sure. But is simply "outside" preferable? To my mind, yes. |

You're not sure? Please state your idea clearlier... And what about 'he was shot several times at the outside of the apartment...'?
Many thanks, Nessie. _________________ :(... something we never have again, I know... I guess I really really know.. :(

It's a shortening of "on the outside of". |

Nessie, I'm rarely in the business of saying "That is 100% wrong" or "That is absolutely incorrect." When I compare to a stanard, I use "Business English" of the American variety.
You will hear people say "I got down off of the bus." Many people would frown at that. I got off the bus, I got down off the bus (if there were steps), but not "down off of" - saying the "of" was not necessary and was, in fact, sub-standard.
However, it's so commonly said that perhaps one day it will become standard. That's why I often won't say "it's wrong!" when it sounds off to my ear. (Note I say "often" - if you come back at me with "Is 'I seen it' okay?" I will tell you "NO!") |
