Dear Sim,

It's probably a good idea to read sample essays to see how other people start their compositions. As you know your TOEFL essay should contain three parts - an introduction, the development and a conclusion. In the introduction you have to try to catch your reader's attention as fast as possible. You can achieve this by using a quote, expressing a provocation, presenting surprising facts and statistic, etc.

You can't pass or fail a TOEFL exam you will only get a score. afterwards you can use this score for your appropriate purpose. Which means you have to send your score to the place you want to go for example if you plan to apply for a university you send the score to them. The important fact is that this places need you to reach a minimum score for example many universities in the US need scores greater than 90. In short the higher your score the better because it's typically competitive meaning that the person who has a higher score has more chances.
