Which is the safest route and reliable material to prepare for GRE? Tue Sep 30, 2008 3:22 am  Which is the safest route and reliable material to prepare for GRE?

Best thing to do is start with a review book. I have one called Cracking the GRE and it is very good, has a great overview. Get the one with the DVD so you can get the prep tests. They are very similar to the real GRE. This is the book: http://www.amazon.com/Cracking-2009-Graduate-Test-Prep/dp/037542864X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222737395&sr=8-2

I also have a vocab book called Word Smart for the GRE that is really, really good. Great hit rate of words you will actually see on the GRE. http://www.amazon.com/Word-Smart-GRE-2nd-Guides/dp/0375765778/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222737510&sr=1-1

And of course you need to also practice with the official tests. They're called Powerprep and you can get them free here: http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=302b66f22c6a5010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=d687e3b5f64f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD

I would also buy the official guide for practice questions if you have the money: http://www.amazon.com/GRE-Practicing-Take-General-Test/dp/0886852129/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222737696&sr=8-1

It's a little old but probably still worth it. The new one doesn't come out until next summer!

Try to do 2-3 hours of prep on weeknights, doing mostly untimed practice questions, and a test each weekend. Carefully review your results!! Don't take test after test without knowing what you did wrong. So many people make that mistake!

it depends on how much you want to score. i had much time before the exam but less to prepare for the exam because of my job conditions. i sat for the exam on the last weekend and scored 1230 (verbal: 470, math: 760). the math lost scores are due to time limits (i spent more time on the early questions and lost control over the last ones). i basically used the Princeton Review and nothing else. If you utilize your time well, i guess it would easily guarantee 1400+ for you. cheers!
