Difference between 'weather forecast' and 'weather report' #16 (permalink) Fri Jun 26, 2009 11:19 am   Difference between 'weather forecast' and 'weather report'

IMHO, Jamie explained the difference in a brief and straightforward way.

I think, for the sake of clarity and brevity, there is no point in repeating someone else's answer (especially if this repetition contains grammatical mistakes). If one is in favour of someone else’s answer, it is more appropriate, in my view, to just mention that without rephrasing it.

Sorry if anyone doesn't like my comment.

Best regards

Hello everybody,

Last lesson I was asked to try to distinguish between "the weather forecast" and "the weather report". I have never thought over such a linguistic problem but I'd like to try my chance. In my opinion "the weather forecast" is a prediction what is the weather will be in the future and based on the observation, research, experience and scientific knowledge of meteorologists. While "the weather report" is a mere statement upon the actual weather phenomena that have just happened in a definite place of a definite region. Sometimes "the weather forecast" may differ from "the weather report" and, of course, "the weather report" is more accurate and depends only on exactness of observation and measurement.

Best regards,

Yuri

Hi Honey,

I am glad we understand each other and I only expect you to be attentive with capital letters in your writing.
But how about some opinions of native speakers? Are we right about the weather?
You are welcome.

Hi Effiong,

There are several answers to your question already on this forum, which are all perfectly valid. A 'forecast' is a description of what is likely to happen/will possibly happen and a report is an account of what has already happened.

A weather report and weather forecast are usually the same thing.

However, a forecast is always a scientific prediction about future weather conditions.
A report can sometimes refer to current weather conditions, especially in an emergency situation such as a hurricane or tornado.

Hi Daemon99,

Yes, they have! And it seems they tell me that more frequently as my hair turns gray! Now, if only I had his money and connections, I would be set for life :)

Take care,

The difference between "a weather forecast"and "a weather report&a #29 (permalink) Mon Jan 25, 2010 0:09 am   The difference between "a weather forecast"and "a weather report&a

Hello everybody,how are you today?
I just finished a test about the weather.A weather forecast:I know what it means. A weather forecast is given a week or 10 days before, which it means they tell us what to expect in the future, next week. But what about "A weather report",could be the person who report the weather. Can anyone, who knows better then me the difference between them, explain to me please.
Thanks in advance.
Admira.

Any kind of forecast is an attempt to predict the future. So a weather forecast tries to predict the weather. It doesn't have to be next week's weather, but in the morning it could also be the afternoon's weather.

A weather report is simply an explanation of the weather. It tells what the weather is like now, but a weather report almost always contains a weather forecast also.
