The meaning is 'to go on the offensive'. If you take the game to them you're attacking, not defending.
In other words, stop playing defensively, and play an aggressive offensive game.
You can use this as a metaphor anytime you wish to do something proactively. _________________ Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.
