English quesitons: He felt he had at last ... his ambition (reached... #1 (permalink) Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:09 am   English quesitons: He felt he had at last ... his ambition (reached...

Hi my friend,

Since I believe your English is perfect , I wanted to ask you some questions that seemed abit strange to me while I was taking a not very standard test,

so here they are and I hope you'll answer them patiently and give me enough explanation on the reason to choose the choise and why not the alternatives,although they might seem ridiculous:

1-He felt he had at last ........ his ambition(reached-accomplished-obtained-achieved)==(my choice:achieved)

2-The world is ...........a serious energy problem (meeting-heading-confronting-facing)==(my choice:confronting)

3-I'm very .....to know the result of the test. PLease tell me,doctor(worried,anxious,disturbed,alarmed)==(my choice:anxious)

4-One thing is certain. He is ....... to have robbed one Bank. He may have robbed more.(known-believed-said-thought)==(my choice:believed)

5-It should be .... that students aer expected to attend classes regularly(marked-reminded-noted-perceived)==(my choice:reminded)

6-Enough money has been raised to ........ the hospital's survival(enable-ensure-endow-empower)==(my choice:enable)

7-We will get married as soon as we have....... the problem of where we are going to live.(resolved-achieved-managed-settled)==(my choice:resolved)

Thanks alot,

yours.

Hi,

My comments:

1-He felt he had at last ........ his ambition(reached-accomplished-obtained-achieved)==(my choice:achieved) AGREED

2-The world is ...........a serious energy problem (meeting-heading-confronting-facing)==(my choice:confronting) I WOULD CHOOSE 'FACING' SINCE 'CONFRONT' INDICATES AN AGRESSIVE ATTITUDE, WHICH IS NOT SHOWN IN THE TEXT

3-I'm very .....to know the result of the test. Please tell me,doctor(worried,anxious,disturbed,alarmed)==(my choice:anxious) AGREED

4-One thing is certain. He is ....... to have robbed one Bank. He may have robbed more.(known-believed-said-thought)==(my choice:believed) I WOULD SUGGEST 'KNOWN' BECAUSE OF One thing is certain
5-It should be .... that students are expected to attend classes regularly(marked-reminded-noted-perceived)==(my choice:reminded) I WOULD SUGGEST 'NOTED'

6-Enough money has been raised to ........ the hospital's survival(enable-ensure-endow-empower)==(my choice:enable) I WOULD SUGGEST 'ENSURE'

7-We will get married as soon as we have....... the problem of where we are going to live.(resolved-achieved-managed-settled)==(my choice:resolved) AGREED

It often helps to look at common collocations, mosiiniut.

Let's take "ambition" for starters.

In The British National Corpus (BNC) we get these hits from a search of verb + pronoun + ambition:

ACHIEVED HIS AMBITION 9
ACHIEVED HER AMBITION 1
REACHED HER AMBITION 1
ACHIEVED THEIR AMBITION 1
ACHIEVED THAT AMBITION 1
ACHIEVED MY AMBITION 1
ACHIEVED ITS AMBITION 1
TOTAL 15

................

Quote:
2-The world is ...........a serious energy problem (meeting-heading-confronting-facing)==(my choice:confronting)

That would depend on the meaning of "confront" there. Does it mean "be face to face with" or does it mean "deal with"? It's hard to tell.

I'd agree with Alan there. Worried, disturbed, and alarmed are normally collocated with the preposition by in such sentences.

anxious to know something
worried/disturbed/alarmed by something
