Another use of THAN in comparative sentence? #1 (permalink) Sat Oct 11, 2008 7:25 am   Another use of THAN in comparative sentence?

Hello everyone,
Please help me with the 2 difficult sentences below:
1.The Western part of Oregon generally receives more rain than does the eastern part.
2.The first world cup in Asia drawing near, he is spending sleepless nights figuring out which team would win the championship.
In the first sentence I wonder why it shouldn’t be ‘’than the eastern part does’’ .As I know it is a common comparative structure.
In the second sentence, why we don’t change ‘’would win’’ into ‘’will win’’ because the main clause is in the present forms.
Please explain it to as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance !!!

In the first one, you can write it either way. It receives more rain than the eastern part does, or than does the eastern part. However, western should be lower case.

In the second one, it should be "will." You are correct. It also should have a period instead of a comma after the word "near." It's not a great sentence.
