A debtor owes something to someone, and you owe money or its equivalent to a creditor.

We should also note that "debtor" can mean "sinner".

Hi Molly,

Could you please quote some sentences in which 'debtor' means 'sinner'? I can't find this usage in any dictionaries.

Many thanks,
Nessie.

When Presbyterians and Congregationalist say "The Lord's Prayer," we say "and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors."

Other versions use "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" or "forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us."

That's the only use of "debt" to mean "sin" that I'm familiar with, but having said it every week, it's pretty familiar to me!
