Am I wrong in thinking that there has been a rise in "language coaches" on forums recently? If you're out there, language coaches, tell us something: Did you used to be "language teachers"? If so, what career change, training, rebirthing, etc, did you go through to become a "language coach" - whatever that is?

It feels very liberating to be a language coach. Carrying this badge is both pc and fashionable, and losing the teacher stigmata is similar to the way feminists must have felt when they rid themselves of bras and other constraints imposed on them by tradition and society. No one loves a teacher, but everyone loves us language coaches!

They may love you, but they wonder why they're getting exactly the same from you as they were when they paid you to be a teacher.

Hey c'mon, how many you coaches went through "language teacher >> facilitator >> coach" mill? And while we're at it, any corporate communication consultants here?

I've heard of ESL academies in Spain where the language coaches are forced to engage in synchronised downloading of 32MB files on the whim of a cross-dressing data inputter.

(Sometimes in gangs of 154. And I doubt whether their laptops were Toshibas.)

MrP

Sorry, MrP, but the term would be shown the door were it to appear in our academy.

Hey, MrP, do you ever go to parties and overhear converstions such as this coming from the loo?

Quote:
X: Hey, that MrP's here.

Y: Oh no, he's the one who tells that same old "joke" over and over again, right?

X: Yep. And, he's the one who gets all offended when you use ", right?". So watch your tongue there, right?

(I've even heard of academies in Spain where professors and pupils post from the same IP at 2 in the morning as they do at 3 in the afternoon...)
