Guarantee is the more general of the two words in meaning. It has the sense of assurance both as a noun and a verb. Warranty is the actual written document that supports the assurance that something will be repaired or replaced without additional cost to the buyer. _________________ English as a Second Language You can read my ESL story Present Simple |

| The main difference is that Guarantee is also a verb, while warranty isn't. But their use is interchangeable if I'm not mistaken. |

Warranties may include representations, agreements or promises that a proposition of fact is true at the time of the contract and will be true in the future.
A guarantee is a formal promise or assurance that certain conditions will be fulfilled in the future.
Guarantees are generally time limited, for example a contractor may guarantee their work for a period of one year, during which time they will come back and correct any problems. After the expiration of the guarantee, you generally have no recourse if something goes wrong. Also, a guarantee may also set forth specifically what they will do in the event there is a problem.
However, a warranty is a representation regarding the state of something during the period of the warranty. You may still have some limited legal recourse if it turns out that there was a problem that existed during the period of the warranty, even if the problem wasn't discovered until after the expiration of the warranty. For example, if an appliance has a serious defect that doesn't manifest itself right away, but was sold with the defect.
So there are subtle differences between warranties and guarantees. |
