Wonderful essay,I hope i will be able to write such an essay or my life experience one day in good English . found bit difficulty in understanding few words.I watch English movies but i don't know the meaning of many words but i understand it by situation or by looking at the scene (moment). I know this is bad thing, i should open dictionary and see the meaning. Because single word has different meaning in different situation. |

Hello Alan, Thank you for the essay. It was a difficult essay for me , but with a dictionary I think that I understand most of the words and sentences . I hope ( in the interests of European harmony !!) that I understand the spirit of this essay . I wonder how it would be an essay written by Alan after a trip ( a long trip if it is possible) in my country, Romania, probably very interesting. Best regards, Catalina |

Hi Alan! It is a great essay. And of course it is high-level English. To be honest I can not use my vocabulary like you. I am afraid I am far from you (I mean level of English). Many thanks for the lesson. I saw at what level I should strive for.

Hi! What a wonderful composition and very cognitive. We often use words of an apology (certainly if we polite people) in our everyday's life, but we never gave a thought on ethymology of these words. I have learned a lot of ineresting things. Thank you very much Best regards Lara |

Hi Alan thanks for the wonderful essay. I was going to ask you about what you mean by "The English are primarily a taciturn lot." But you've already answered it.
cheers |

Alan:
I would like to say that it was a little bit difficult for me to understand the essay, because I found some words and expressions that I did not know, but finally, I think I could understand what all was about.
I think that it is very interesting to learn the expressions you use in different situations, and also the origin of the words and how they are changing as time goes by, due to they get muddled up or because of the process of crossing over letters from one word to another.
I have some questions about some expressions that were not clear enough for me:
What do you mean when you say “a real four letter word”?
What does pocher mean? I found posh in the dictionary, but no pocher. Are they synonyms?
Does “as if you’re meant to call out” mean “as if you wanted to call out”?
What does “when you’ve hinted at the possibility” mean?
What does “mind you” mean? Where does this expression come from?
What “settle down“ mean?
Beside this expressions that I found in the essay, I have two comments about the first story (It never gets you anywhere) from the English Grammar Stories book.
The caption at the end of the story says: ANDREW SMODLEY HAND THE RING TO SALLY FAIRWEATHER’S FUTURE HUSBAND.
This sentence is not clear for me, because I am understanding that Sally’s future husband is Andrew. Is Andrew giving the ring to himself?
The other comment is that when you explain how to make questions you say that don’t and doesn’t (I can understand that also do and does) are used AFTER the pronoun. I think it is a typographic mistake, and it should say BEFORE. Are you going to correct this mistake in the book?
I enjoyed the essay and I will appreciate your replies for my questions, and your comments about my English.
Regards. |

Hi everybody!
I have received no reply to my questions, why?
Besides I have another question:
What does “In the interests of transatlantic harmony” mean?
Regards. |
