I think he is liable to choke violently on the salt water. The time sequence is confused with that word order and phrasing, Volcano.

Taking a deep breath, he dove into the sea.

I think it may be correct to say - he took a deep breath and dived into

"Dove" is correct, and "dived" is also correct. ;)
