Is adding 's wrong? (What is your father's name?) #1 (permalink) Fri Oct 31, 2008 9:15 am   Is adding 's wrong? (What is your father's name?)

Could someone tell me which of these sentences are correct?

1.What is your father's name?
My father's name is X.
or
What is your father name?
My father name is X.

Is it wrong to add 's with father? I have heard both. If adding 's is wrong, could you please tell the reason?

2. I am an Indian.

Why is it wrong to add an article?

Regards,
Muktha.

Hi Muktha

1.
Only these are correct:

- What is your father's name?
- My father's name is X.

2.
You can say it with or without the article.

- "I am an Indian" ==> "Indian" is a noun.
- "I am Indian". ==> The word "Indian" is an adjective.

It isn't wrong to use "an". However, because a native American might also be referred to as "an Indian", if you say "I am an Indian", it won't necessarily be clear whether you are from India or whether you are from North America.
