Hi Jan,
The initial question was
"Where does the English language come from?"
Tom was interested in the origin of Germanic languages.
Do you have any intelligent suggestions?
Or just this:

I am afraid all of them are bloody Germans except Germans themselves , because Germans are now more Italians then Germans.
If you take all population of Europe , you would find that 80% of us would be originating from just 8 or 9 very very old female ancestors. Our common DNA features (or we may call these DNA tricks) are without any pity for politics or religions believes.

did one predate/influence the other? |
The Scandinavian tongues and German both come from an older language that died out so long ago that there is no record of it. It split into a few branches. The North Germanic languages include the Scandinavian ones, and German and Dutch are part of the West Germanic group. I think Gothic was East Germanic, but all we have of that language is a few scriptures. These languages were all developing at the same time.
There were changes to the German consonant system, so English and Dutch have the older consonant system, but German still has the grammatical case system that English has lost.
All of them influenced each other all along the way. |

cool, thanks
I knew that Scandinavian and German tongues were older than English (the Britons were speaking Latin and the Celts were speaking some Gaelic/Celt tongue when Hengest brought his Saxons to Kent -- think it was Kent, anyway). Who knows what the Picts spoke... probably Pictish. hehe _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |

Native English speaker Rolf,
from "bloody" (as I know) Very very old German as all Scandinavians and Dutch, even name Angle is from one German tribe.
Is it not funny? For example , when English try to blame Germans ( just because of being Germans) for something and in real are their closest brothers...??? Even bloody Queen is just one more German.
Coming back to your second question I contribute every day as you said once and now have "just this". If "just this" is to hard to use I leave you with your own thoughts.
I never liked you anyway. You are very ugly.
Just kidding,
but you are maybe a bit to serious. Have a nice day. Jan I was not kidding ...after all. |

The isle of Britannia is a melting pot of Germanic tribes.
Think about it:
- Celts - Picts - Native Brits (whatever they were called) - Scots (some of whom came from Ireland) - Angles - Saxons - Jutes - Vikings/Normans
it's a wonder the Goths didn't send an arm to britain. They were (apparently) content to set up shop in Spain and Italy. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |

Yes it is amazing and just think whatever left from Romes have been mercilessly push to Wales. This small corner have been the longest free spot. Welsh are than not real welsh but their are truly "last survived English" but their are not English because English are Germans. Oh dear what a mess. After all "they" I mean English were ruled 300 hundred years by French which have not been French because they were Normans. It is to much for a baby Jan really. Honesty, I am asking now, if under such circumstances some healthy nation could be developed ???

I thought that both English Britons and English Celts were pushed into Wales by the Germanic invasion(s)..
Or was it just the Britons?
(I'm assuming that the native inhabitants of Wales were Celtic) _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |

Dear Jan,
Again and yet again comments like

prove that you clearly are more than just one sandwich short of a picnic.
But you're on a good track. Now that you have got to the gist of the problem,

Some Celts have been left alone e.g. Ireland
I guess people were all over mixed, but Wales as the State or independent State and no one of Anglo-Saxons many different states survived for long just there. And of course there were not old Welsh but all together who had managed to escape Germanic invaders.
