Check it out:
What's up? I'm Tom. I was born in Wisconsin. I live in Nashville, Tennessee. My girlfriend's name is Freda (I know, it's misspelled) We live in an area south of town (the city of Nashville) known as Brentioch -- between the suburbs of Brentwood and Antioch. Our dog's name is Molly... she's a bitch. (a female dog, literally) As a native Wisconsinite, I cheer for the Packers, the Brewers and the Bucks. As a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, I am a Badger. I love music, sports, God, my family, cars, women (generally), my language and my country. I love to eat. I love the cuisines of many countries, not just American food. I believe, generally, that English is most powerful when it is verb-driven as opposed to adjective-driven. Note the difference in veracity between "he sucks" and "he is sucky". I had a beer or two tonight after working hard at work (my job -- we call it "work") today, and now I'm pretty tired.
I hope you do what Torsten said if you want to learn our version of English, the American tongue:
Listen.
Watch movies, listen to songs, talk to Americans, read American books to see the minor differences in spelling between British English and American English.
Immerse yourself in American English if you want to learn it.
English is spoken in many countries. Each country has its own slang words and phrases. There was a topic here about American Slang -- if you can't find it, Torsten may be able to help you.
Many of the American slang words & phrases are spoken often by Americans like me, Amy, Jamie(K) and other Americans who post here, and probably by some non-American (read: inferior! hehe j/k) posters as well.
Well, it's time for yours truly (me) to hit the hay (go to sleep).
Take care,
