Hi, I am also preparing for GRE. First of all i can tell u one thing. No wordlist is BEST. if u are taking a computer GRE obviously the difficulty of questions will increase after your each successful answer. they have a ranking of questions based on difficulty. so they will rank the words in popular rank list lowly. My advice is read.... and read... your reading should include a mixture of both fiction and nonfiction. try to finish a good novel by every week and read good weeklies like newsweek and time. they will really help. there are a lot of good vocabulary building books. refer them and refer a dictionary and thesarus regularly. Websters dictionary and oxford thesarus is very good. by merely mugging up wordlists u wun get the context and shades of meaning of words. try to find out the root of each word. best of luck for your exam. |

It's best if you do all of our GRE vocabulary tests to see how many of those words you know.

My opinion is that Barron's is standard. But as the admin said you have to go through all the word lists available to get high scores.
I go thro' barrons , kaplan and arco.
There are lotsa other websites too like:
wordhacker.com
FREEVOCABULARY.COM
etc.
Good luck on your preps |

I suppose that everyone is different, but I am not confident that reading is the best approach for GRE Vocab prep. When you read novels, how often do you encounter relevant GRE vocabulary? When you read a GRE wordlist, how often do you encounter GRE vocabulary? Sure, the retention may not be as good when using a wordlist, but word lists are more efficient. Read novels for entertainment or if you plan to take the GRE sometime within about 10 years from now. Vocab lists, if studied properly will build your vocabulary much faster than reading novels. You may not remember everything you see, but that's why the GRE is multiple-choice. |

I agree - there are several sources of wordlists but I'm sure most of them will have largely the similar sets of words.
I find learning words in small groups easier. These GRE wordlists (majortests.com/gre/wordlist.php) are pretty well organised and I just print them off and take them with me to learn. |

hi there!!
you can have a look at my compilation of all gre words. I have posted a thesaurus of most of the GRE words sharing similar meanings. I have seen many wordlists on the net but nowhere did i find a work similar to this. I felt learning this way (to know words of similar meaning) would be easier and better aid us in remembering. Go ahead and look for my post. I hope you find it useful!!
Enjoy reading!! |

There are two things that make a good word list: the number of words and the clarity of definitions. When it comes to these two criteria, I think this word list is hard to beat:
wordlist.gredic.com
It's actually a compilation of Barron's, Princeton Review, Taisha and some more, and Webster's definitions jump in when the others are not clear enough. There are over 6,500 words. |

Hi There,
Well, Barrons is a std book. I have been studying flash cards for gre as it is pretty handy and compatible. It can be studied anywhere and anytime. I have also downloaded mobile wordlist which can be studied whenever you want. It covers around 3500 words. You can visit www.edusoftech.com and check the site. I think it will prove to be useful to you guys.
All the best

| In my experience, I used the top words presented in the Kaplan book and princeton book and that was it. I got a 600 on verbal, which I was very pleased about. You should also do lots of practice tests for verbal on your computer so you can get a sense for the timing of the questions (especially the RC questions). |

Hi sujatha_552002, are you sure you know the meaning of all the vocabulary words that occur in the GRE? Also, what about spelling words correctly? Do you think paying more attention to correct spelling might help you increase your GRE score? A final note: If you put your email address on a public forum you soon will receive a lot of spam. It's better to use the private messaging system of our forum.
