How to tell my manager that I have completed my sentence on Phone? #1 (permalink) Tue Nov 11, 2008 8:51 am   How to tell my manager that I have completed my sentence on Phone?

We frequently report to our manager (in the U.S) over phone and give status on a daily basis. My major problem is - When I finish two or more sentences, how can I indiacate that I have finished my sentence. I mean, I will wait for his reponse. Based on his response, I will again reply to him.

Is there any word/sentence that indicates this (I am talking to my MANAGER).
How to tell manager that I have completed my sentence on Phone?

(He waits and I waits with some uncertainity to know that whether we/he finished his sentence.)

I know that this is somehow lengthy, can anybody help me by giving an advice.
Thanks, Suresh

Hi Suresh

Much depends on what you've just said, of course. However, asking a question after you've said something to someone is a tactic that is often used. For example:

- What's your take on this?
- What do you think?
- Am I on the right track?
- Have I forgotten anything?

Even a yes/no question signals that you want the other person to respond or react.

Hi, Suresh

In addition to what Amy has said, I want to add that "advice" is an uncounable noun, and you can say something like : "giving some advice" or "giving a piece of advice"

Take care ! ;)

How to tell my manager that I have completed my sentence on Phone? #5 (permalink) Wed Nov 12, 2008 11:08 am   How to tell my manager that I have completed my sentence on Phone?

Our conversation would be:
"Hi Jane, today we have executed 10 scripts for our client-ONE. I found 10 defects in that application. Object-Name is not found. The property of the object -Address- has been changed. The field color, field size, text have also been changed. We .......(many more details...)".
I stopped here. to wait his response.

Even after 5-10 seconds, I don't hear him, I start my status.
Here, he also starts. The confusion starts HERE.
Is there any word to indicate that I finished this sentence/description and want to know his reponse.

Thanks,
Suresh

Here is a practical suggestion - (I noticed that TV reporters use this manner).. name the person at the end of the message. i.e. in your example at the end of the conversation say. Jane? Make sure to say the name of the person as question (but it's important the pronounciation - tell the name as question, i.e. Jain?) If the message is not clear, watch a CNN progamme and you will find lot's of examples.

Good luck! Arthur
