Hi Torsten,

I don't find jokes disturbing, not at all. Jokes can be used by teachers as a tool especially if they see the situation, like in a class, getting so serious and needs some ice breaker. It's always fun to break some jokes to keep students relax and to save the discussion from becoming boring. Personally, I find a discussion boring when it gets very serious and I would want some breather to change its mood before I lost my interest.

By the way, I'm really working on my speaking skills and I want to be very conversant and fluent in English because I need it for my target job. I have a trainer and she suggested that I would talk to someone who's very good at it so I would get used to it. I could think of no one else for help but your team. Please let me know if there's ever a chance that I could talk to someone from your team.

Thank you!

I've been laughing for 5 minutes.Thank you.

My mother was a very absent -minded person and would say such things.

My mother also asks . " Where is Tigranchik?/her grandson/.
My brother's wife answers to her husband." Hanging in the wardrobe!" " Who,Tigranchik?, asks my mother astonished.

Hello Torsten;
I think that senses of humour can help in language studying,
but the humour should be moderately ....
May I write some aphorisms concerning to teaching and to teacher?? ok,Thank You.

''A teacher who is not dogmatic is simply a teacher who is not teaching.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton''

''He, who learns but does not think, is lost.
He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.''

I think when teachers try to tell a joke or be humorous in class, he should wait for the right timing. In your case Alan, i thinnk the students might not have understood what you were trying to say. A good comedian knows when to shoot a joke. heheheh.. that's what i think. In addition to that, I think jokes have something to do with culture or the listener or audience should be familiar with the current situation of a certain country or its culture. I'm saying this because sometimes, i read jokes in English and I don't understand why it is funny.

Just saying what I think. Thanks..

Hi, Torsten,

Humour and laugh should be an integral part of teaching, especially languages, especially English. If pupils were given only grammar and lexis and sounds and pitches and tones they would be bored to death. The teacher shouldn't be a walking grammar book or a dictionary, shouldn't be stuffed with preaching and moral admonition and shouldn't tower above pupils as Monblan.
Humorous situations performed on the lessons sometimes much more effective than a heap of drills or exercises. There may arise many tensional situations during the lesson which are to be laughed out of the class with a good humour. On the other hand the teacher shouldn't turn himself into a laughing stock and the humour should be divided among everybody. Humour and laugh should be kind, healthy, helpful and ,of course, teaching.

Best regards

Yuri

Hi Everyone;

I am gifted in being an easy laugher individual. This is the reason that people love to be around me and I am really grateful for that. About humour and education, I can tell you my story and you may judge how important it is. I always struggle with spelling in English language; one of the words that I always misspelled was BEAUTIFUL; since I watched Bruce Almighty movie. Jim Carry says B_E_A_utiful for describing the weather of his life. After that I have never forgotten how to spell the word beautiful again. Adding a little bit of fun in teaching method will make the lesson more interesting and easy to learn.

Okay, it's time to blow the dust off of this one:

A pirate ship is on its way home after successfully plundering several ships. Word about the pirates' evil deeds has spread and the maritime military assets of several nearby nations are after the pirates.

The watchman spots one such ship on the horizon, sailing straight for the pirates. He asks the captain:

"Captain, Captain, what shall I do?"

The captain replies, "Bring me my red shirt!"

The pirates meet the other ship, fight valiantly, and defeat the ship sent to destroy them.

That night the watchman, puzzled at the peculiar pre-battle request, asks the captain:

"Captain, why did you ask for your red shirt with battle on the horizon?"

The captain replies, "If I'm wounded in battle the men won't see my blood, and they'll continue to fight valiantly."

That night the pirates party well into the wee hours, draining several barrels of the good stuff.

The next day the pirates are hung-over. While they are busy clearing the decks of the party's remnants, the watchman spots an entire fleet of ships sailing straight for them.

"Captain, Captain, what shall I do?"

"Bring me my brown pants."

Hi Torsten,

I like humour myself and it helps quite a lot when I'm in a difficult situation with my students or even with my fellow staff. It sort of lightens my burden.
