Hi Jose,

Some brief explanations:

spared the embarrassment = not have to experience something humiliating/ that makes you feel ashamed
to rubbish = to say something is useless
to pooh pooh = to have a low opinion of
work that one out for yourself = you can find the answer without me
jester = joker
hop around = jump about on one leg.

A bit of a laugh ;-)? #50 (permalink) Wed Dec 03, 2008 21:50 pm   A bit of a laugh ;-)?

Hi guys

I often use humour in lessons to break the ice, make a point or lighten the mood.

One useful video clip I used with students who did not see the point of learning English was this one.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gHYQEzevu8

They started to talk about the scenario in English, and afterwards I asked them why they had not used German.

I believe the silliness of the video really broke the ice with this group.

Their response was "It makes no sense to". Although I got to highlight the use of "would" for their reply I also think the penny dropped with them.

They now have a penalty box they use for every time they speak German. The punishment is 50 cent.
This system can sometimes work as an incentive. Especially if the group rewards themselves at the end of the course. The person who uses their native language most will end up also contributing the most money to the present/ party/ drinks etc.

Hi Alan!

Thank you . Your explanation have been clear for me. I prepare TOEIC because I'll apply to Regent's American College London. It's very good if you have an advice to me. The test will take place at the American Cultural Center here in Antananarivo Madagascar.I don't have someone to practice speaking with me but I can study vocabulary and grammar.I listen to CD American Language Course, general english,to the BBC and to the Voice of America just a few munite because most of the time they broadcast music.Would you like telling me what are the important things I should include in my Statement of Purpose(about my application)? Thanks again!

Hi Jose,

I'm afraid I couldn't possibly give a recommendation based on the very brief knowledge I have of your knowledge of English.

Hi Alan!

Thank you very much although you can't give me a recommendation letter. It's up to you to make a decision about my request. I don't mind at all. I want to put my photo in my profile but I don't know how.

Laugh is a need #57 (permalink) Thu Jan 08, 2009 14:28 pm   Laugh is a need

To me,laugh helps us forget burden in our life, release stress, keep us healthy.
As an English teacher,I think we should stimulate students' interestin learning by making they laugh through our ridiculous pictures, funny stories, our movements(body language)or games...The comfortable astmosphere is very important , it helps students get knowledge more effectively.

Humor is difficult to use, it should be used in the right moment, it's not to say jokes for to say jokes. It's very important in class to make people laugh, but in the right moment, and no to take a person to pull his leg, as Nina said. It could be right depend on the circunstances. I posted an humoristic note about tests in the topic of names, I don't know if mr Torsten is annoyed, but for example in this topic that is for humor I can do it.
I dictate other subjects classes, and I use humor in classes and encourage students to make humor. That change the mind of the people. Authority should be used when necessary

This story is captivating and i don't think i would have managed to make the king's daughter laugh. I on my part, would say am not all that humorous because people say i am always serious and strict though i do make them laugh occassionally.
