s-genetive with apostrophe and quotation marks #1 (permalink) Thu Nov 13, 2008 17:18 pm   s-genetive with apostrophe and quotation marks

Hi, I'm from russia and it is customary here to use company names in quotation marks (inverted commas) eg. Joint Stock Company "Energomash". In most cases it is impossible to omit these commas/marks when translatting the name from Russian into English because it is the official name of a company as registered in the constituent documents, and found in licenses, approvals, consolidated financial statements, etc. therefore it must be retatined.

So my question is: given all the above, how do I place the apostrophe for the s-genetive construction, particularly if the word does not end with the letter "s"?

eg. "Energomash's" Board of Directors vs. "Energomash" Board of Directors OR: JSC "Neftchermet's" annual report vs. JSC "Neftchermet" annual report.

NB. Please, do not advise me to change the construction 'cause it won't help in the least((. I need to know how to deal with such constructions!!

Thanks a lot in advance for your (hopefully:)) quick and competent replies.

Hi Hewhocares

It's nice to see you back again.

I would not put the name of the company in quotes at all. I would simply capitalize the name -- just like any other proper noun.
Quote:
eg. Joint Stock Company "Energomash".
I might write that one of these ways:
- joint stock company Energomash
- Energomash, a joint stock company

Quote:
eg. "Energomash's" Board of Directors vs. "Energomash" Board of Directors OR: JSC "Neftchermet's" annual report vs. JSC "Neftchermet" annual report.

These would be my choices:
- Energomash's board of directors
- the Energomash board of directors
- Neftchermet's annual report
- the Neftchermet annual report
.

Hi, Amy
Happy to hear you again and also to know that you are "in charge of my case": it bodes well.

But as I have explained in my first post - quotes must be retained 'cause it is the customer's requirement - that's why I have no choice but to comply. :(
So again, considering this"quotes - a must" requirement, how would you place the apostrophe in the above examples?

Thanks!!

Use the company name as an adjective as you have here? "Energomash" Board of Directors

And use as many "of" formations as you can: The requirement most central to "Energomash" instead of "Energomash's" most central requirement.

I agree with Amy, by the way. I'd remove them, but you say it's not possible.

If the proper name of the company is "Energomash" then you can't put the 's inside the quotes, but "Energomash"'s is just awful.

Hi Hewhocares

I'm glad Barb posted. She's more knowledgeable about this sort of thing than I am.

I would normally bend over backwards to avoid writing something such as "Energomash's". If you have to use the quotation marks, I would recommend avoiding the use of the possessive 's completely with the name of the company. Use formations such as this instead:

- the "Energomash" board of directors
OR
- the "Energomash" Board of Directors

Or as Barb also suggested, use constructions with the word "of".

Personally, I would try one more time to convince the customer that trying to apply Russian grammar rules to an English text is not logical. Is there any possibility that they might accept the Russian names being italicized rather than in put in quotes? If so, you would italicize the name, but not the possessive 's. Perhaps if you showed them this site they might be persuaded to accept that as an alternative (scroll down to the possessives section):
