Which is correct and what is the difference between because and because of?

The first one is right, and the second one is wrong. "Because of" has to be followed by a noun phrase, and it can't be followed by a clause.

Hi volcano,

I agree with Jamie. But if you want to use "because of" in the second sentence, you need to drop the subject " He" and change " had" to become " having".

He was late because of having missed the bus.
