have had vs. had had #2 (permalink) Mon Nov 17, 2008 9:08 am   have had vs. had had

Present perfect
I have had
you have had he/she/it has had
we/you they have had

Past perfect

I had had
you had had
he/she/it had had
we/you/they had had

In general:

The present perfect is used for an action that started in the past and is stil continuing - I have been learning how to play the guitar.

The past perfect is used to indicate a time before the past simple. I had taken a shower before I went out.

I hope this helps.

Hi Mizuki,

Before you continue posting your questions, I'd like you to read Why is a meaningful message title important?

As for your question, 'have had' and 'has had' are present perfect constructions while 'had had' is past perfect. If you want to learn how to use tenses correctly you need to read entire sentences rather than just trying to cram the rules into your head. Do you have a sentence where a 'had had' construction is contained? If so you can post it here.

Many thanks,
Torsten
