The de facto language -- the lingua franca -- of the US is English. Every wave of foreigners that has come here has had to switch to English, or at least learn enough of it.
The masses from Germany, Poland, China and Italy didn't whine about their respective tongues being recognized here.
Today we have a large latino contingent. Are their English-adaptation requirements the same as the ethnic groups who came before them?
I say we save some dough and keep packaging, street signs, etc. in English. That is the language of the USA and if people want to be able to communicate with Joe America, well, he speaks English.
The Declaration of Independence doesn't begin with "Cuando...".
There.

| By the way, do you think DC residents were happy to have a new Prez? I can imagine what they expect from Mr. Obama now. |
Hi Michael I imagine it's pretty much the same in DC as it is anywhere else in the US. Many people are very happy that Obama won the election, and there are also McCain supporters who still appear to be quite unhappy about it. I for one am happy and optimistic about Obama being our next president. You're right about expectations. Obama has definitely got his work cut out for him when he takes office. There's one heck of a mess to be cleaned up.

Generally speaking, no. It's just informal. Of course, here on this forum you run the risk of people possibly not being sure whether you're referring to Bush, Obama or Prezbucky.

I guess you meant to say "I liked hearing from you" (?) Thanks, Michael. And it's great chatting with you on the forum again, too. You were gone for quite a while. Glad to see you here again. . _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Hi Amy, I agree with you. Letīs keep our fingers crossed he will succeed at least on some issues. But what I initially was referring to -mentioning DC-residentīs expectations- was the last clause in the wikipedia article you referred to with your link in your recent quote. It is reported there that Mr. Bush intended to vote against their right for election.

Good idea! Tom (prezbucky) for President! Surely not the worst choice! :)

Honestly, I meant both: I tried to express that I greatly appreciated (usage of like in the subjunctive form) any response from you since I like your style and in this sense, of course, was trying to say that I enjoy chatting with you. _________________ "Ho ho!" said the clown |

Michael, I promise to cut your taxes, increase your benefits, bring world peace and find the ultimate balance between workers' interests and globalization while toppling unions.
We'll have some welfare, but not too much, because we don't want a large mass of able dependents sapping the wages of economic contributors. We need to get these people excited about finding and keeping a job.
So I have devised a workout video titled "Economy of Steel: Six Months To Full, Rippling Strength" in which I detail exactly how we'll get entrepreneurs, workers, consumers and investors to maximize the producing, employing, purchasing, investing capacity, willingness and effectiveness of our econmy. Buy one today in your local market or call 1-800-NOTAPOL. At just $6.99 (+S&H for phone orders) this video offers more value than a one-hour massage. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hi Tom,
So do you think Obama will try to make English the official language of the USA or this an issue too trivial now that the US economy has been in turmoil for quite a while?

I don't think ESL is on his mind, but his global superstar status might bring more people into the fold. There's so much personal debt we have to alleviate before people will be able to start businesses, buy goods/services and invest. I have no doubt we'll recover -- we always have -- but it likely will take a couple years. I honestly think we need a 21st century version of the Tech Boom to really provide a spark. Governments suck at stimulating economies -- real economic stimulus comes from business/consumer/investor. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |
