I know the tenses but I dont know how to use it. For example, currently I am writing mail, which one of the below statement is correct?

>> If port number is specified then it will assume windows machine else unix machine.

>> If port number has specified then it will assume windows machine else unix machine.

Your statement reads like software code :). I think "is specified" is correct. I'm curious to find out...when you say "then it will assume..." Is "it" the port number or "it" the software program? It is not very clear to me.

Correct its software code statement. Hmmm "it" dont have any meaning. :-) let me put it this way.

>> If port number is specified then software will assume windows machine else unix machine.

>> If port number has specified then software will assume windows machine else unix machine.

I also feel "is specified" is correct but why "has specified" is wrong? When we can use it?

Thanks,
Paresh

"If port number has specified then software will....".
---
This could be wrong. Someone should have specified the port.
"If port number has -been- specified then software will....".
OR
"If port number -is- specified then software will....".

If the sentence does not with fith this criteria, it is wrong.

I agree with Sureshvemuri. A port number cannot specify something unless it has artificial intelligence :). Someone (via software code) assigns a number or value to a port. You can avoid the ambiguity by rephrasing it to something like: "If the port number has a value that is not NULL, then..."

Diverhank - "something unless it has artificial intelligence "
By God's grace (I don't know whether he really exists or not, If he exists...then), these sceintists have not progressed till this phase.
Maybe someday, these humanbeings will be destroyed by these artificial machines (their soul lies in the software which has been written by humanbeings itself).
Anyway, this change is not stoppable (until it destroys all the living things on the earth).
