What is the difference? "work for" vs "work in" #2 (permalink) Fri Nov 21, 2008 1:06 am   What is the difference? "work for" vs "work in"

hi sherif

Some basic usage is as such,

Work for a person or company or an industry
e.g. I work for Richard Branson, Steve Jobs etc
I work for Virgin, Apple etc
I work for the entertainment industry, the IT industry.

Work in a department, location, business field.
e.g. They work in Sales, Procurement, Maintenance etc
They work in Berlin, the outskirts of San Francisco etc
They work in Marketing, IT, Education.

Would you like to try some of your own sentences?

The phrasal verb "work in" has different meanings:

1. To insert or introduce: worked in a request for money.
2. To make an opening for, as in a schedule: said the doctor would try to work her in.
3. To cause to be inserted by repeated or continuous effort.

In the phrase "work for", the two are different words.
