What happens if I exceed the TOEFL exam time-limit? #1 (permalink) Tue Nov 25, 2008 9:45 am   What happens if I exceed the TOEFL exam time-limit?

Hi all,

i was wondering what happens if I exceed the time-limit of 45/60 sec. given on the independent/integrated tasks in the Speaking section?

Is it that bad? is it possible that one gets a lower score just because he/she didn't fit in the time frame? even though of his/her fluency?
Should I by any means stop and conclude my statement before the time is over, regardless of that I have not said everything I want?
for example, if i have stated my last main reason and have only a few seconds left but not enough time to provide specific details, what happens then?

ok, may be my questions are kind of dumb but please give me some hints or share your personal experience if you have already taken the TOEFL.

Thanks a lot!

In my point of view, you shouldn't exceed the time limited because they just listen to what you say in 45 seconds or 60 seconds. It 's appropriately to prepare your answer as fast as you can, and then you can move faster or slower in your response to stress what is important ^.^ . Thus, i advise you controlling your answer carefully for they won't listen what you say after time limited. Good luck to you.

It is quite plain to me that i have to adjust my answers to the time provided and answer as quickly as possible. And i will do my best in order to succed!
BUT there is still the 'what if..' and in this case i am not aware of the consequences..
Will this dramatically low my score if i don't fit in the time frame?
Can somebody enlighten me on this issue? :?

this will help me, and may be some other test takers, to prepare more efficiently for the exam.

Thank you in advance!

of course yes, you should leave few seconds. you shouldn't attempt to say all the things, just mention in what 's important.

The device stops recording you after your time expire. If you didn't finish, that will lower your score for incomplete answer and impossibility to fully express your ideas. You might miss some key information because it wasn't recorded, that will lower your score, as well.
