Without other planets circling around their heads, confusing me much #1 (permalink) Thu Nov 27, 2008 7:08 am   Without other planets circling around their heads, confusing me much

the dialogue is as below:

Cory:
Well, I guess because I didn't know how to tell you. I'm not ready to go out on a date yet.

Topanga:
That's ok. Jedediah and Chloe have always told me: "Listen to your inner voice. It'll let you know what is true for you."

Cory:
Yeah, my parents said that too. Only they said it without other planets circling around their heads.

-------------------------------------------------
My question:
the last sentence "Only they said it without other planets circling around their heads." confused me very much, it can't be translate or understood literally, isn't it?

what does "planets" here mean? Sad

PS:
Here is the URL for the dialogue:

.
I suppose that the whole phrase, 'other planets circling around their heads' is meant to suggest that the person having them is spacy [stupefied by (or as if by) some narcotic drug] or otherworldly [Of, relating to, or characteristic of another world, especially a mystical or transcendental world].

Do you mean that this phrase means the person's mind is not conscious ????

as you using words: stupefied by some narcotic drug.

What a obscure metaphor phase it is, if you don't know it very clearly, i won't use this phase when communicating.

Anyway, thanks very much!!

No, nothing in my explanation mentioned 'unconscious'. I said 'spacy...or otherworldly'. You are listening to a tape of 2 TV-show sub-teens and have no idea what the characters of 'Jedediah and Chloe' (the spaced-out people) are, so there is no way of pinning down the definition and more precisely.

In any case, it is unwise to incorporate the idioms and slang of US TV comedy shows into your vocabulary. Stick to standard English as you hear it in documentaries and the news.
