That is surely a challenge ... but I think you will find that English comes from many languages and the task to explain this is something that would nowadays take someone a lifetime. Try Googling the internet, you may find some wonderful website...
Did you know that one of the oldest UK languages in the world is Welsh?? and its sounds nothing like English ... look here
WELSH: Gwybodaeth gefndir ddefnyddiol am yr iaith Gymraeg ac am Fwrdd yr Iaith Gymraeg a'i waith. ENGLISH: Useful background information about the Welsh language and about the Welsh Language Board and its work. |

João, any good English dictionary site contains the etymology of any word it defines, so it will certainly give the Latin origins of words that come from that language (about 60% of the words in English come from Latin, if I'm not mistaken).
I recommend m-w.com for that, but there are other good sites you can use. |

If so many words came from Latin, why is English not considered a romance language? _________________ Non-native speaker of English

A very good question! English is not considered a Romance language because it doesn't originate from Latin. It began as a mixture of several Germanic languages and simply acquired a lot of Latinate words later on. Its grammatical structure and logic still reflect its Germanic origins. |
