Are you more accustomed to seeing "holiday" as the BrE version of "time away for fun"? In the US, we take vacations, while in the UK, as I understand it, they go on holidays.
Next year we plan to take two vacations. One will be to visit relatives in the summary and one will be to go to Disneyworld in the fall. |

Hi Torsten,
Yes, we both "take" vacations and "go on" vacations. "Take" has more to do with the time away, and "go on" has to do with the destination, but this is a general observation and not a rule.
When do you plan to take your vacation this year? When do you think you'll go on vacation this year? We went on a great vacation to the Caribbean. (I'd be less likely to say "We took a great vacation to the Caribbean.") |
