Here are the right ideas, Mr Hanifa:

Gerund: A gerund is an -ing verb when it acts as a noun; gerunds can act as the subject or object of a main verb, e.g. Studying is good for you. The gerund looks identical to the present participle, which is used after the auxiliary verb 'to be', but are not the same as they do not function as main verbs.

Progressive aspect: The progressive, or continuous, aspect is formed with the auxiliary verb 'to be' + - ing, the present participle. It shows that an action or state, past, present, or future, was, is or will be unfinished at the time referred to, e.g.

I'm reading Nelson Mandela's autobiography. (action unfinished now)
She was having a shower when the phone rang. (action unfinished at the time the phone rang).

Now let's see if you can hazard some answers.

Actually, there are 3 choices; the last three are participles used as adjectives:

1a. The letters were being typed. (Progressive form)-- Yes
2a. His hobby is collecting stamps.(Gerund)-- Yes
(Note: collecting stamps is taken as collecting-stamps)
3a. The movie was boring. (Adjective)
4a. That was an exciting game. (Adjective)
5a. His explanation was confusing. (Adjective)
