I started nothing, I wish I didn't. #1 (permalink) Mon Dec 01, 2008 12:09 pm   I started nothing, I wish I didn't.

I'm always confused with this.
So,

I started nothing, I wish I didn't.

Does it mean

I started nothing, and I wish I had started something.
or
I started nothing, and I wish I hadn't started anything.
?

It should be, of course, I wish I started something in the context,
but just wanted to make sure.

Is that a correct grammar anyway?

Cheers :)

You are confusing me too:)

Do you mean to say:

I haven't started this, but I wish I had?

I don't know lol
It's a song by the Ting Tings 'We started nothing'

it goes like

No one dropped of waiting in despair
Every time I go there's no one there
So tell me where's the soul, oh! where's the soul
Submit it's all locked up, so hard to loose control

I started nothing, I wish I didn't x4

this.

what do you think they mean?

Ting Tings or Ting Tang?! #4 (permalink) Tue Dec 02, 2008 11:07 am   Ting Tings or Ting Tang?!

Hi there

Had a listen to the Ting Tings - I think the song is just one of those ones where one shouldn't worry about the meaning. Probably has to do with either a boring place or a boring person...That is all I can fathom. The blond woman reminds me of Debbie Harry very much - do you know her from the old 70's band Blondie?
I noticed the Ting Tings sing with an interesting accent to the effect of
I sta'ed so'min, I wish I di'nt...
A good example of speaking and swallowing at the same time:)
I like different accents. If you want to hear good examples of different British accents, have a look in youtube or the bbc website.

I typed Ting Tang by mistake into youtube and heard another nice band from Halifax - a nice way to get an ear for the different accents is to listen to the music.
Have fun with English!

Yeah I do know her from Blondie. Haven't had a thought about that, but yes! I think she kinda looks like her!
I love their accent too. Northern English accent.
Thanks again. And I WILL have fun with English : )
