here is the context:
With all bad news facing the US economy and the markets right now, most people may not be even aware of this gargantuan and growing pie of red ink, even if they are walking right under it.
Finding a cure to this growing epidemic might be easier said than done. For fighting two wars in the Middle East, or paying interest on our national debt, In title may cause a rising as population gets older, and remember those stimulus checks from earlier this summer? No, no, no, no, no, before the 700-billion-dollar rescue plan. Well, those cost 168 billion bucks, back to the 700-billion-dollar financial rescue plan. Well, let’s just say that those costs have not yet been included in the Treasury Department’s recent budget report.
Here are my questions: 1,"cause a rising", here, a rising of what? 2,"as population gets older", is there any relationship between "the rising of ? " and "older population"?? 3, why is this a question for the author? ironic? |

Did you see this text written, or is it transcribed from speech? The wording is very strange, and I can't imagine it being a written text. In any case, it's not a sterling example of good English.
I think the text was spoken, and that the words "In title may" are supposed to be the word "entitlements", which means money that people get from the government because someone thinks they deserve it (are entitled to it), mainly because they are old, handicapped, students, poor, etc. As the population gets older, more people collect pension payments and other of these "entitlements" from the government. |

Thanks very much for your kindness. As i am not a native English speaker, just an ESL, there're many words or sentences we don't know, even can't find it in normal dictionary, so i usually met a lot problems in understanding what the native speaker want to say. There's a long way ahead of me including obstacles in Improving English, i will insist on it.
Anyway, thank you again! |

It should be 12745.htm, not html. http://www.tesoon.com/english/htm/12745.htm Like Jamie guessed, it should be "entitlement costs are rising as the population gets older..."
There are a few more mistakes in the transcribing. Like: 1. tag to the books, should be to add to the books 2. growing pie of red ink should be growing pile of red ink 3. “Because we don’t have turn monuments” should be “Because we don’t have term limits?” 4. so that we let things get very undefendable.” should be "so that we let things get very out of hands.” |
