Hi Stanciu, do you know how to use a spell checker? You can download and install Firefox, an add the spell checker. It's a very handy tool, just try it out.

How can I improve my writing skills? #107 (permalink) Mon May 12, 2008 12:02 pm   How can I improve my writing skills?

Dear teachers,

Could you please help me correct this piece of writing? Thank you a lot :)
"Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One should never judge a person by external appearances. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer".

How to assess an individual appropriately has been a thorny question puzzling human society for generations. A number of opinions claim that external appearance is the most effective means to judge a person. However, I completely disapprove of that biased point of view. This piece of writing will thoroughly clarify the rationale for my perspective.
The very first reason for my opposition to the appearance-based-judgment on people is the changeability of human look. Thanks to modern world’s achievements such as plastic surgery, cosmetics, fashionable clothes etc., an individual is totally capable of faking an outside appearance at his or her discretion. An ugly woman could be easily turned into a beauty following a costly plastic surgery. An emerging singeress whose look proves to be modest would become an extremely attractive idol on the stage should she take full advantage of available cosmetics. A young girl who hails from the countryside would quickly get an urban and stylish appearance when dressing up fashionably. Indeed, appearance is evidently not a trusted means to evaluate an individual.
Worse, judging people based on external appearances is able to cause unexpected repercussions. A person who only pays attention to opposite people’s outside looks risks missing opportunities to deal with amiable people and being deceived by wrongdoers. A businessman would probably find himself throwing away a lucrative deal if he despises a crucial business partner just because this person does not dress up luxuriously. On the contrary, in numerous frauds, a large number of victims usually witness their huge amounts of money disappear at the hand of good-looking miscreants who deliberately put on expensive clothes and accessories. Thus, assessing people based on external appearances is undoubtedly capable of inflicting adverse losses.
In conclusion, judging individuals on the basis of outside looks is undeniably an untrusted and detrimental stance. Therefore, almost all people are strongly recommended to further scrutinize other inner qualities of opposite persons other than external appearances.

How can I improve my writing skills? #109 (permalink) Tue Aug 05, 2008 22:35 pm   How can I improve my writing skills?

I am new to this site and I too am looking to improve my writing. See, I was born as a native speaker of English, who lives in America, but as a child I had a hearing problem and because of that childhood affliction I still struggle to write correctly. Yes, I made some improvements over time, but I am still a long way in writing smoothly. Right, now, I am struggling in writing in my English courses at my college. I do get help when I am there, but when I am home on holidays and such I do not have anyone to practice with. So, I became thrilled in finding this site and hopefully it can help me too. Some problems I know I have but is hard for me to spied as I write are some grammar mistakes, sentence structures, and some other stuff that probably be more noticeable to those that grasped English writing better than me. Also, when I try to expanded on a subject/topic to make it longer on paper my writing normally get crappier. Any tips to be able to write longer, such as, more then four pages? Please, used what I just wrote as against me...show me my mistakes and ways to fixed them.

Hi, I'm Erwin. I come from the Philippines and just like you guys, I want to improve my writing. I'm in my first year in college and I was quite discouraged when I learned that I was placed in the basic English class while most of my block mates are all in the regular class (some are even in the advance class!).

I'm looking for tips on how to construct essays well. I think my problems are in the organization of ideas rather than in grammar. I'm looking forward to learning with you.

More power to the generous teachers. God bless!

Hy Quan!

I've just seen your message about judging people by appearance.
I like to talk about this topic and this is why I'll tell you my opinion related to this.
Maybe I'm on the opposite because it doesn't matter how looks a person if I can get well with her or him.
This is maybe because I don't like fashion wery much and I almost never use makeup. It sounds strange to hear a girl saying this? I'll be 24 in 23 September and I can count on my two hands how many times used makeup. :)
For me is much more important the inside , the character of people. I'm always choosing my friends regarding to this. And I think it helps me a lot finding normal people who are all the time ready to help me if I need help.
Lots of people change in character if they become famous. They forget their friends or act differently.
I think most of people who are finding their biggest realization in following the fashion are all superficial and it isn't worth the trouble becoming their friends because they are friends until they can get at their purposes with your friendship. When they can't use you any more they forget you. They are utilitarian.
Nobody can judge someone for his clothes. Maybe he's poor but usually he can know a lot of things it can be intelligent.
But unfortunately money speaks in our world. Someone can gain his purpose if he has money. If not it is very hard.

I could write lot of other things as well, but I'll stop for now.

Hello Phuquy,
My name is Nour, i have read your email which was about, how to improve your skills in the writing , I have a suggestion so as to do so, I wish to be useful. Anyways,
so as to be able to write perfectly, basically, you need vocabulary, because you express on your thoughts by English words, also, you should dtermine 10 minutes each day for a free writing, write about anything you think about or you had that day, write about something you watched in the news, something, you heard it from your friends, mother..., in brief write your uppdattes, when you finish account how many words have you written, i am sure that day by day, you will increase the number of words which you write, In addition, you will be able to write spontane without translation.

Anyways, i wish to be these advice useful, please, if you have any comments, send me your feed back.
Regards,

Nour.
