Where can I learn to improve my writing skill? #181 (permalink) Thu Jul 02, 2009 2:17 am   Where can I learn to improve my writing skill?

I know my question is so normal. But I hope someone will be willing to help me. Maybe there are some mistakes in my question, aren't they?

Hello,

I think no one can teach you how to write. I think it is something that you develop. May be you can learn how to organize ideas when you write, but not 'how to write'.

Good luck,

Mouhcine

Hello everyone,

I'd like to say that such forum is very wonderful and beneficial. From its title which is 'How can you improve your writing skills?', this forum focuses on improving the writing skills. Through several days I have read all contributions appeared withing such forum. The majority of participants described their weaknesses of the writing skills. This means that all of them want to develop their language especially in the writing skills. I agree with them and for a long period of time I have been looking for a website which deals with such issue. All of us have difficulties and drawbacks in writing skills but they differ from a person to another.

Therefore, I am going to participate within the forum in order to benefit and improve my writing skill. I wrote some texts about various issues. Those themes were brought from the Toefl website. I talked about such topics in my writings and timed myself half an hour.

Finally, I want your feedback on those topics.

Smile Hi dears,

Here is my first essay which I wrote it two years ago. I timed for myself thirty minutes in order to practise according to Toefl essay test.

* Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
"Actions speak louder than words."
Use specific reasons and examples to support your response.
________________________________________________________________________
In this article, I am going to talk about what the statement 'Actions speak louder than words' means. Also, I shall provide my view concerning such statement.

This statement means that actions affect on people effectively positively or negatively according to the goal of the speaker more than only talk. In my thought I absolutely agree with the above proverb. For example, in educational process, educationalists prefer 'learning by doing' approach more than only explanations. This is due to that the target idea and concept which applied by 'learning by doing' way is fixed in students' minds and understood very well.

In short, I talked about the definition of the above statement and my opinion about it.
_______________________________________________________________________

I am waiting for your comments on it.

Regards,
Mohammed

I got an essay corrected by an Englishman once and I couln't find out which sort of errors I made. I have checked my essay for typical errors like using the wrong verb form or forgetting the plural S for example so I hadn't done that sort of careless mistake.

I even got an essay corrected by an Englishman which first hade been corrected by my Swedish English teacher at my school.

Noone are able to write a good English or other language. Even authors get their essays and books proofread by someone else.
We all make linguistic errors and now I make typos too as I can spellcheck my writing.
What is the most correct to say many people ask here. If I write "Today I was to town." then another person says it's better to write "I was to town today."

Practice makes perfect are always said especially to a beginner like me. I want to practice my english grammar and speaking to develop my skills in english communication. With this idea I came up to a point that I want to write anything that will cross in my mind. Anything as long as it will help develop my english communication skills to a much higher degree of understanding that I can offer to myself.

I hope in this way I can be fluent in speaking, accurate in topics that I want to express clearly and no inhibitions to share my thoughts ad ideas.

My city.
I wasn’t born here, but I have live here since I was 7 years old. And I love it. Why? Because, it is a beautiful and peaceful city although it still has some problem about traffic and environment as other big city.

On rush-hours, all most of roads and streets often have got the traffic-jam. Because there are to many transports on the road, special the individual transport. Now, the city’s economic is developed. So many people who are rich can buy the cars. And many streets are to small and old beside the comfortable cars. Because there isn’t enough parking space, many cars are had to stop on the road. So the streets are smaller with those cars.

Because there are to narrow and to many transports, the city’s environment is pollution on most of days. The smoke from the transports, the rubbish and the dirt from the area of building has destroyed the environment.

However my city is a beautiful capital. From the height, my city is the green. There are many lakes here, example: Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Thien Quang Lake, Ba Mau Lake, Bay Mau Lake… There are some rivers run through the city, Red River, Kim Ngu River, To Lich River… And there are many streets which is covered by the big trees. And I like walking around on those. The lakes and the trees help to reduce the pollution for the city.

I like the city most on the holiday. On those days, many people who are from the other province (they come here to work, study, business…) come back their hometown. And some people travel. So the street is quiet. And I love that moment. I feel safe and sound. Not crowed, not noisy, not dusty. In that moment, I see Old Hanoi, quiet and peaceful Hanoi as I saw when I was a kid.

If you can, please come to Hanoi, come to Vietnam. You’ll love it like me. It’s very wonderful.

That sentence seems to be right. Maybe they hurt themselves too. Smile I havn't read any articles about that. I just made a search on Altavista and I got 1600 matches. I just wonder what to do with all the matches... I don't like matches it's better to use a cigarett lighter. Smile

It's a play on words. As I and Kitos are unsure about the right meaning of the words I seached the Internet and find out that it may be correct.

But for us it seems to be wrong. The phrase "went into a town" seams to be incorrect. I should say went to town or was to town. If you went into the town you go bump into the builings in the town. Smile
And the word matches have two meanings too.

Riddle
Why do the English cricket team need cigarett lighters ?

Can you answer it ? Smile
