Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

It is more important for students to study history and literature that it is for them to study science and mathematics.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.

TOEFL essay: Studying history and literature more important that science... #2 (permalink) Sat Dec 06, 2008 15:09 pm   TOEFL essay: Studying history and literature more important that science...

My essay:

History, literature, science and mathematics are all classic and very important subject in their own sense. No subject can be given more or less importance in life. However, for school students, it is more important to study science and mathematics.

Typically the school syllabus for history and literature comprises of learning a lot of topics by heart and then writing them all down during exam. After the exam, almost no one really remembers what all they had mugged up. The French wars and the Dark Ages are all forgotten by the time the term is over.

Science and mathematics on the other hand, are challenging subjects which need to be understood. They require logical reasoning, analytic skills and proper organization of ideas. All these virtues are vital in daily life, even after school.

Additionally, science and mathematics help us understand the world around us. How does water turn into steam? How much time will it take me to reach my destination if I drive at a particular speed? How does my digestive system work? All these questions can be answered with the help of the subjects and so help us make better use of the resources we have in hand. Even later in life, one will remember the lever fundamentals for using simple garage tools. These lessons are learnt for life.

Finally, studying science and mathematics opens many more doors for the future career. After studying science in secondary school, it is still possible to change lanes towards law at university, but if one only does the art subjects in school, one has no possibility of becoming an engineer as easily later.

The works of Shakespeare and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are interesting, but so are the laws of gravity and motion. Hence, I disagree with the statement and believe that students should study all subjects and gather knowledge in all fields, but they should not ignore the sciences for the arts.

First of all, I want to congratulate you for this appealing essay. Second, I have no problem with the introduction and the body of your essay as much as I have with the conclusion. Your belief is:
Quote:
However, for school students, it is more important to study science and mathematics.
but what I understood in your conclusion is:
Quote:
disagree with the statement and believe that students should study all subjects and gather knowledge in all fields
The whole sentense
Quote:
I disagree with the statement and believe that students should study all subjects and gather knowledge in all fields, but they should not ignore the sciences for the arts.
is awkward.

As far as I am concerned, science students are not the only ones who learn analytic skills. Literature students learn that, too. I am thinking about criticism.. Moreover, literature students understand the world around them better, too. They know about nations, other cultures, and know how and why others get to what they are now .

One final comment, is on the phrasal verb mug up. I think it is informal and must not be written in formal writing.

Overall, your writing seems to be well organized.

Good luck

Hey Happytofita,
Thank u sooo much for your corrections and suggestions! They are really highly appreciated.

Yes, you are right that I sound a little confused about my take towards the end, and I have again used a little informal words in the essay.
I shall try and improve on this.

Thanks a lot!

Culture and science are the columns of any civilization and its society is responsible for expanding both fields for a balanced growth to be. The educational systems around the globe usually provide courses on both directions. In the modern hectic and industrializing world many people come to doubt the value of humanitarian courses at our path for a successful career. However, disrespect towards our fellow humans and nature, depression and anxiety sweeping all ages are just few of the examples that point to the demoralizing philosophies.

For our era an intensive effort to teaching students the concepts and probable connotations of literature and history will improve our fundamental system of ideas and thus our actions.

The willpower and spirituality of Gandhi and Luther King can teach student a lot on how to deal with seemingly unbeatable barriers in our world of passivity. Beyond, though, the biographies of determined people ,history can show us the drama and pain of tragic events like wars. In that way this knowledge will counterbalance the appeal towards violence fostered by video games.

Moreover, the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci the intelligence of Napoleon can inspires students to aim very high not simply to a big salary. And of course famous quotes like "be the change for the change you want to see,” said by Gandhi, could teach the truths of life. Of course is not important for the students to comprehend them; these ideas will be like signposts-theories explored through applicating them.

The same method is applied for the quest in the ideas of literature. However, the ideas of literature can help students to attach more with their sensitive side rather than with the rational one required from historical analysis. Shakespeare and Kazantzakis can take us to a world of beauty and passions where stories pull our heartstrings and play with our feelings. This shift to our emotional side will grow a respect for the power of emotion and urge to control them. Nowadays intensive anxiety and other forms of negativity can be easily dissolved with a compassionate and self-controlling attitude.

Otherwise what is the use of knowing how to solve differential equation, if they are not part of solving the epidemic expansion of, for example, aids into a population. History and literature are needed nowadays more than scientifically courses. Since from solving the globalization issues to coping with the greenhouse effect our demoralizing philosophies and aspirations are the cause and the perpetuating factor of them.
