Sentence: After they decided against the deal in 1980 it still took years... #1 (permalink) Sun Dec 07, 2008 0:24 am   Sentence: After they decided against the deal in 1980 it still took years...

Hi there,

I'd appreciate help with these sentences:

1. After they decided against the deal in 1980 it still took years until the crisis ended in the area.

2. After they had decided against the deal in 1980 it still took years until the crisis ended in the area.

Which one is correct? Or none of them (hopefully not)?

Thanks in advance

Which sentence is correct? #2 (permalink) Sun Dec 07, 2008 3:40 am   Which sentence is correct?

.
Well, they both need punctuation:

1. After they decided against the deal in 1980, it still took years before the crisis ended in the area.

2. After they had decided against the deal in 1980, it still took years before the crisis ended in the area.

Both sentences are OK, but the past perfect of #2 is unnecessary, since the order of events is very clear without it.
.
