I am her to learn English and I hope to find someone to help me to correct my mistake in writing today during when I was study English I found new interesting word it is “upon”, “upon” is give the same meaning of “on”, okay this is not the problem I continue focus about this word and I get more examples about it until I found some sentence isn’t clear for me the sentence is:
• He climbed upon his lap for comfort.
Words lap what I know about it, it used for computers lap or place to make a test and experimentation, and after long search I found the word lap and lab it is the same pronunciation but different spelling.
• Upon arrival, they went in search of a hotel.(what did he mean by this sentence did he mean when he arrive he want to find a hotel “talking about future”)
• Upon my word! (when we used this word)
• He climbed upon his horse and rode off.(what is the exactly meaning of “rode off” & ride away)
Could you please help me to solve this mystery what the writer mean by lap in the above sentence.
If you don’t mind can you give me your opinion about my writing and what are the weak points in my writing.

Hello Makareena,

Welcome to this wonderful place.
Quote:
He climbed upon his lap for comfort
To the best of my knowledge, lap is used with computer, Laptop. It is called so because we put it in our laps. A lap is the top surface of the upper part of the leg.
As far as
Quote:
He climbed upon his horse and rode off.(what is the exactly meaning of “rode off” & ride away)
is concerned, it simply mean that the person who rode the horse, went off. Off means away.
Concerning your writing, let me correct your paragraph and then you will know your weaknesses:

I am here to learn English, and I hope to find someone to help me to correct my mistakes in writing. Today when I was studying English, I found a new interesting word: “upon”.Upon” has the same meaning of “on”. Okay this is not the problem. I continued focusing on this word, and I got more examples about it until I found an unclear sentence:
• He climbed upon his lap for comfort.
What I know about the word lap, is that it is used for computers. And the other word lab is a place to make a test and experimentations. And after a long search, I found that the word lap and lab have the same pronunciation but different spelling. (They do not have the same pronunciation, [p] and [b] are different)
• Upon arrival, they went in search of a hotel.(what did he mean by this sentence? Did he mean when he arrived he wanted to find a hotel “talking about future”?)
• Upon my word! (when should we use this word?)
• He climbed upon his horse and rode off.(what is the exact meaning of “rode off” & ride away)
Could you please help me to solve this mystery. What did the writer mean by lap in the above sentence.

By the way, Arabic is my native language, too.
Here to serve you
Good luck.
