. These are correct:
- Do you know that John's received a new letter from Becky? - No. - She wrote / She's written that she wants to visit us next week.
- Where's our new device? - Oh, it's broken. John burned / has burned it. - Oh no! We paid a lot of money for that! And it had such a suitable interface!
- I've stopped / I stopped using this software. - Why? - It had a lot of problems. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

But what does determine the use of these tenses in these examples? Maybe, the intention to change the development of context? |

. The choice is primarily the speaker's individual mindset. Present perfect makes the action more immediate, in some way, to NOW. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

It is not very fair. For example: "John has written a capturing novel. He published it about 20 years ago..." Here John just in the "center" of context. |

. My statement was perfectly fair. There are theses written about all the nuances of the uses of present perfect, but I am certainly not going to try to elaborate them all here. Mine is a simple overview.
John has written a capturing novel. He published it about 20 years ago. -- In the first place, this seems poorly written-- I think the writer means 'captivating novel'. In the second place, it works precisely to my guideline- it brings John's old novel up to present consideration of his ability. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Are the tenses used correct here?
- Why do you not use the application created by John? - I do not like it. It conflicts with some other applications. - Do not worry. He made some corrections and now the software works well. - Well, I will try it. But what about him? Does he still work in "Jolly Hacker"? - No. He has worked there only for some months. He found some unexpected solutions and wrote two rather interesting codes. After he leaved the company he joined to "Still Spies". But now he is in a police station because yesterday he beat his chief. It is interesting to note that when he was sitting down into a police car he looked happy and his words before the door was shut were "I did it!" - probably his hate for his chief has been cherishd for a long time.
Thanks. |

. The verb tenses are mostly OK, but it is not very natural.
- Why don't you use the application John created? - I don't like it. It's not compatible with some other applications. - Don't worry. He's made some corrections, and now it works fine. - Well, I'll try it. By the way, does John still work at the "Jolly Hacker"? - No. He worked there only for a few months. He found some unexpected solutions and wrote two rather interesting codes. After he left the company, he joined "Still Spies". But now he's in jail, because yesterday he hit his boss. And when he was sitting in the police car, he looked happy, and he said before the door was shut, "I did it!" He has probably hated his boss for a long time. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Thank you very much for detailed corrections. And three examples, probably, the last ones in this thread, more:
... John has made some corrections. He rewrote input/output and changed the part of the code relating to interruptions. Also, he has improved the interface...
... Unluckily, he has come too late. Somebody has picked the tire of a wheel of his car and John has spent a half of an hour changing it.
They have manufactured power supplies using this technology for the last two years. |

I do not mind the appearance of other people in my thread, but I saw with amazement "Hello, Hoda and Palych. What are your questions?" because, first, we are not a team, second, I have already put my new question above. Here is it:
"... - Let John do it. - He has gone. Mary has told him that somebody has broken the windshield of his car and he went out."
Thank you. |
