A question often asked is: “What are the marks of an educated man?"It is that one may gain no inconsiderable body learning in some special field of knowledge without at the same time acquiring those habits and traits which are the marks of an educated gentlem. A reasonable amount of learning must of course accompany an education, but, after all, that amount need not be so very great in any one field. An education will make its mark and find its evidences in certain traits, characteristics, and capacities which have to be acquired by patient endeavor, by following g ood exam- ple, and by receiving wise discipline and sound instruction.
I think an education here does not mean the training and instruction (esp of children and young people in schools, colleges, etc) designed to give knowledge and develop skills, could you tell me its exact meaning in the context? Thank you ! |

| I read your paragraph several times and I still can't definitively make out what it's trying to say... not a very well written paragraph, I'm afraid. You need to provide even more context. |

. Yes, in the passage, 'learning' = formal schooling (college, etc), while by 'education' the writer refers to a greater understanding of the world and society. It is actually, however, the first definition in some dictionaries:
Education 1. the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

My understanding is that the question here is: What are the characteristics of an educated person? Tian do you mean additional qualiteis of person in addition to his/her formal education (knowledge)?
If so, then I think all dimensions of humanity. |
