The supporting sentence adds detail, proof, example or explanation to the topic sentence.

Topic sentence: Dogs make better pets than cats.
Supporting sentences: Dogs are more willing to share in their owners' activities, because they are a species that normally lives in social groups. Also, because they are territorial, dogs can be trained to guard their owners' property and possessions.
