1-Read books was what I did.
2-To read books was what I did.
3-Reading books was what I wanted to do.

Good morning
I think that we say :
Reading books was what I did ( if you really read books which mean that you did the action of reading in the past)
Reading books was what I wanted to do ( If you wanted to read of caurse in the past )
