How to make out will and would? #1 (permalink) Tue Dec 30, 2008 15:03 pm   How to make out will and would?

Listening to Englihsh sentences, I sometimes find it hard to tell the pronunciation of "will" from "would".

When you speak fast, is there any difference in pronunciation between will and would?
For me, both of them sound like just "wu".

I usually judge from the meaning of the sentence, but there are cases I can't judge only by its meaning.

Thanks in advance!
Rei

"Will" sounds like [wɪl]. "Would" sounds like [wʊd].

When we speak fast, "will" sounds like [l], and "would" sounds like [d].

You should be able to hear the different between [l] and [d] at the end of the words, which should tell you which word it is.

Anyway, they don't sound similar to us at all.
