Active verb contain 'to be' structure? #1 (permalink) Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:56 am   Active verb contain 'to be' structure?

Hello everybody,

Could you please help me on following confusion:
Though now I got thrugh with Active & passive.Have a look on my following sentences:
-I wouldn`t like ''to be''in your house.
-I`m glad ''to be'' rid of him.
-I`m glad ''to be''home.
-He is reputed ''to be'' the best surgeon.
-I wanted always ''to be'' friends with him.

My question is in all above sentences ''Agent is avialble'' then why used ''to be''in sentences? & what its (''to be'')means here.

Thanx to all

In these sentences "to be" means "that [agent] is".

-- "I'm glad that I am rid of him."
-- "I'm glad that I am home."
-- "I always wanted that I would be best friends with him."

There is no why. We often just use infinitive phrases to modify certain adjectives.
