Generate/engender Thu May 26, 2005 11:48 am  Generate/engender

Generate means produce in a very positive sense as I used it in this sentence: generate income and it can also be used as: generate electricity. In fact the machine that does this is called a generator.

Engender is used to mean cause something (usually an abstract noun) to happen as in engender enthusiasm/hope/support. If you want other people to help you in a project, you can persuade them of the importance of it and be optimistic yourself and in that way you try to engender their enthusiasm.
