from where vs. where #1 (permalink) Sat Jan 10, 2009 9:42 am   from where vs. where

Hello,

A: A terrorist attack took place a few days ago.
B: From where?

In the dialogue above, B asks "From where?". How about saying just 'where' instead of 'from where'? If the sentence is good as it is, why is 'from' used? If you change it to a full sentence, how can you make it?

Many thanks,
sweetpumpkin

.
'From where?' doesn't really seem the expected question in this isolated dialogue, but in any case it has a different meaning from a simple 'Where?'. The former asks about the origin of the terrorists, while the latter asks about the target location.
